Inspired by the challenges that students face with the rising cost of education, in Summer 2008, HSC began an initiative that would loan course textbooks to students for free for a semester. The program began with 52 books. Students spent their own money to purchase the first 30 books. The other 22 books were donated by professors. Recently, HSC partnered with Campus Safety to obtain additional textbooks. Prior to this partnership, Campus Safety kept any lost books that were given to its office for an established timeframe and then later sold them. Now, Campus Safety regularly gives lost books to Recycled Reading Resources after the established timeframe elapses. As of Spring 2010, we have saved students over $18,000 and are circulating over 250 books. We hope to continue to expand this program in order have an additional 200 books on hand by Fall 2010.
