Maximize Your Experience!

Event PosterHSC likes to kick start every semester by hosting a college-wide event “Maximize Your Experience.” Students are invited to attend this seminar and learn in-depth about the opportunities available at Broward College. On January 12, 2010, we held our Maximize Event in concurrence to Broward College’s Rush Week.

After having a very successful turnout during the previous semester, we decided to cater for a larger audience this time; we were very pleased with the number of people who came.

Ana Rocha was our main speaker who led the presentation. Our key focus of the presentation was the Broward College Honors Institute and all the organizations and activities that revolve around it. We made students aware of many organizations present on campus, presenters who were part of the specific organizations being mentioned also made comments spontaneously. Cara Malave, president of Phi Theta Kappa Mu Mu Chapter introduced Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society to the audience.

Dr. William Senior (English), Dr. Lulrick Balzora (Religion), and Professor Alon Parker (Geography) were among the many honors professors present during the seminar. All of the professors introduced themselves and talked about their experiences as honors professors and described how the honors classes are different than normal classes.

Besides the Honors Institute, we also talked about our organization and some of the initiatives we have come up with and how the students can join and be involved. Students who are graduating this semester gave an insight about their overall experience as students of Broward College, and gave tips about transferring to a university and talked about the major scholarships students could apply for.

After formally concluding the presentation, refreshments were served as everyone mingled. Many of the students joined HSC and the Honors Institute right away (pamphlets and applications were handed to them during the presentation). We also made connections with the Title V CO-OP Teacher Education Program through Jennie d'Anjou who attended the event. The purpose of the event was fulfilled as we laid out the knowledge for students to maximize their experience at Broward College.
