Feeding South Florida

Volunteers for Feeding South FloridaJust in time for the Holiday season, a group of Honors Student Committee members volunteered at Feeding South Florida, formerly known as the Daily Bread Food Bank. On Friday December 4th 2009 the students arrived at the brand new Pembroke Park facility at 9:00 am to begin their work. In early October a fire destroyed 93,000 pounds of food at the food bank's Lauderdale Lakes location speeding up the prior plans to move into the new facility.

After arriving at the new warehouse the students were quickly briefed on how to sort the canned foods into different categories. While a small group of students checked for expiration dates on each individual can another group of students efficiently placed the cans into their respective boxes. Everyone worked diligently and with gusto the entire morning knowing that the thousands of cans they packed up were going to feed people who needed it the most.

The students had such a great time working together to help out the community that many have asked Jessica Carranza, the organizer of this event if HSC can volunteer on a monthly basis. Jennifer Wescott from Feeding South Florida was very excited to see us again and will be happy to hear of our regularly scheduled visits. We want to thank Jessica and all those who attended for volunteering their time and the enthusiasm that made this a successful event.
