This year, the Honors Student Committee together with Phi Theta Kappa held its second annual Halloween Haunted House Event for Kids in Distress. All of our volunteers and financial sponsors really shone through and made this event a great success.
The weather was not able to put a damper on our parade. We held a procession under plastic table cloths to carry the kids over to the planetarium for a special show on the planets and our solar system. The educational aspect was well received by the kids who were very excited and enthusiastic. They even got involved by answering questions and kids started pitching in their own answers about the North Star and other interesting facts.
What a delight it was to see their excitement in the haunted house. The witches that resided in the house were kind enough to welcome our little guests and give them a spook that I’m sure they’ll be talking about for some time to come.
Upon release from the haunted house the kids were free to get a bite to eat under one of our tents, carve pumpkins, have their faces painted, or color in the books that were designed by HSC in our Coloring Book Project.
The night wrapped up a bit late for the kids, but we wished there was more time to spend with them. Before leaving, the kids each received a pumpkin full of treats, one of our coloring books, and their very own Halloween costume.
It was a tremendous pleasure to be part of this experience and to see the impact that a few people with a vision and some generous support can have on the lives of those less fortunate.
