At Broward College, students have an abundance of opportunities to not only improve the community, but to also enrich the lives of others. Among the choices is a particularly special event at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
Once a month on Sundays, a group of student volunteers takes a trip to Joe DiMaggio to spend time with the sick children. For approximately one hour, students hang out with the kids, keeping them company. They participate in activities that include painting, coloring, toys, games, and making t-shirts.
“The main idea is to keep the kids company,” says sophomore Fernanda Jaimes, one of the chief organizers of the event. “We want to help them forget that they are in a hospital.”
Students at Broward College may not care for the credit, awards, or acknowledgment they might receive from their works; rather, they concern themselves with the ability to do good things in others’ lives and putting smiles upon the faces of the less fortunate.
